INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF WISDOM AND EMPOWERMENT: ACTIVE AGING IN THE 21ST CENTURY
In Peru, within the context of a rapidly aging population over the past decades, and especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, the living conditions of older adults have become a growing concern.
This interest comes from policymakers, civil society institutions, academia, and especially from older adults themselves, through their organizations and families. There's no doubt that the pandemic called for responses to mitigate its painful effects, and older adults responded with increased participation and organization, key elements for political influence.
The fast-paced social and demographic changes bring new challenges, but also new opportunities driven by technological advancements. Peru's older population is adapting to this, just as they've been doing for years, taking on the leadership of over 25% of households in the country.
Since 2021, Peru has had a National Multisectoral Policy for older adults, led by the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP), the primary authority on the subject. Additionally, the United Nations (UN) declared 2021-2030 the Decade of Healthy Aging, aiming to promote the well-being of people aged 60 and over. The World Health Organization (WHO) is also pushing a strong campaign to raise awareness and educate people, to end age-based discrimination against older adults.
It is in this context that the Asociación Adulto Feliz, in collaboration with the Social Management Master’s Program at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, is hosting this International Wisdom and Empowerment Meeting – Active Aging in the 21st Century. The goal is to share and discuss concepts, knowledge, experiences, and strategies that promote active aging, well-being, and mutual respect between generations, with the active involvement of older adults themselves.
